What to Look for When Buying a Mangalsutra
A mangalsutra is a piece you may wear every day for the rest of your life. Here is what actually matters when you choose one.
A mangalsutra is one of the few pieces of jewellery made to be worn constantly, often for decades. That makes buying one a little different from buying a necklace for occasions. You are choosing something that has to feel right today and hold up to a lifetime of ordinary wear. Whether it is your first mangalsutra, or something lighter to replace a heavy ceremonial piece, a few things are worth understanding before you decide.
Start with how you will wear it
Mangalsutras fall, broadly, into two camps. There are traditional ceremonial pieces, often heavy and ornate, made in high-purity gold and saved for the wedding and special occasions. And there are modern, fine pieces made for everyday wear, lighter and simpler, built to sit comfortably against the skin all day.
Neither is more correct than the other, but they are different purchases. The right choice depends entirely on how the piece will live. If you want something to wear daily, prioritise comfort, durability and a design you will not tire of, over sheer size or ornamentation.
The gold
Gold purity is described by its karat number. 22k gold is around 92 per cent pure. It is rich and deeply yellow, but also soft, which is why traditional heavy pieces dent and scratch with daily wear. 18k gold is 75 per cent pure, alloyed with other metals for strength. It holds a diamond securely, resists everyday knocks far better, and is the standard for fine jewellery meant to be worn often.
A few things to check:
- Solid, not plated. Gold-plated and gold-filled pieces carry only a thin layer of gold over a base metal. They are far cheaper, but the gold wears away and they are not heirlooms. For a piece you intend to keep, choose solid gold.
- Colour. Yellow, white and rose gold are the same gold, alloyed differently. Choose what suits your skin and your wardrobe. White gold is finished with rhodium and will want occasional refreshing, while yellow and rose hold their colour without it. If you do choose white, here is how to care for it.
- Transparency. A reputable maker will be clear about purity and stand behind it.
The diamonds
If your mangalsutra is set with diamonds, two questions matter most. Are they lab-grown or mined, and are they certified.
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to mined ones, at a fraction of the price, which is why most modern fine pieces use them. We compared the two in full here. Whichever you choose, look for independent certification, an IGI or GIA report, on stones of meaningful size. A certificate tells you exactly what you are paying for.
Beyond that, the familiar four Cs apply: cut, colour, clarity and carat. Cut has the biggest effect on how a diamond actually looks, so a well-cut smaller stone often outshines a larger, poorly cut one. For colour and clarity, anything in the near-colourless and eye-clean range looks beautiful set in gold, without paying for perfection no one can see.
Construction and the black beads
The black beads are the signature of the mangalsutra, and their quality matters. Look for even, well-finished beads and a chain that feels substantial rather than flimsy. Check the clasp, a secure lobster clasp is reassuring on something you fasten every day, and look at how the pendant is attached. These small details are the difference between a piece that lasts and one that loosens or frays within a year.
Everyday wearability
A mangalsutra made for daily wear should ease into your life, not interrupt it. Consider:
- Chain length. Most everyday pieces sit well at 16 to 18 inches. Longer chains are available if you prefer the pendant to sit lower.
- Weight. Light enough to forget you are wearing it, substantial enough to feel like something.
- A secure, low setting. A bezel or well-protected setting is far less likely to catch on clothing than a high, exposed one.
- Low maintenance. The less a piece needs babying, the more you will actually wear it.
Price and value
Mangalsutras span an enormous range, from fashion pieces under a hundred dollars to fine pieces priced well into the thousands. The number itself tells you less than what sits behind it. Solid 18k gold and certified diamonds (lab or mined) cost what they cost, and a very low price usually means plating, imitation stones, or both. The aim is not the cheapest piece, or the most expensive, but the one whose materials and making justify what you pay, and that you will still want to wear in ten years.
Buying a mangalsutra in Australia
If you are buying in Australia, a few practical things help. Look for prices in Australian dollars with any duties and taxes made clear, so there are no surprises at checkout. Fine pieces are often made to order and take a few weeks to craft, so allow time if it is for an occasion. Payment options such as AfterPay can make a considered purchase easier to manage. And buying from a local brand means simpler communication, returns and aftercare than ordering an heirloom from overseas.
Every Sutraa mangalsutra is made in 18k gold with certified lab-grown diamonds, designed for everyday wear. You can see the full collection here.
A mangalsutra is a small thing you carry through a great deal of life. Choose the materials honestly, choose a design you will not grow tired of, and the rest takes care of itself.
