OUR STORY

We are Rolance and Brenna.

Sutraa began with our wedding.

As we planned our wedding, Rolance's mum shared something she hoped for us. She wanted Brenna to have a mangalsutra she would genuinely love to wear every day. Her own was one of the long, traditional designs-beautiful, but not made for everyday life here. She didn't want Brenna's to spend its life tucked away in a jewellery box. She imagined something lighter, timeless, and made for ordinary days.

We are a multicultural couple. Rolance is Fijian Indian, first-generation Australian.  The mangalsutra has long been an important part of Rolance's family's traditions, and through years of shared life, it came to mean as much to Brenna as it did to Rolance, not because it was expected, but because she chose it. The devotion, partnership, and daily choice of one another that it represents are values at the heart of our marriage.

So started the family search for the perfect mangalsutra. Rolance took the search seriously, with his mum by his side. He wanted to find a piece that honoured the significance of the mangalsutra while feeling natural in Brenna's everyday life. Together they looked everywhere they could think of in Australia, even travelling to Fiji and India, looking for something Brenna could wear every day as a corporate professional while still respecting the tradition behind it.

Beautiful pieces certainly existed, but finding a refined, contemporary design that felt like her, and was easily accessible in Australia, proved far more difficult than we expected.

So Rolance created one for her instead.

Sutraa was born out of our love story. But it was never meant to end there.

What started as one piece for our own wedding quickly became something more.

People noticed it. Friends, family members and sometimes complete strangers would ask where it came from.  Many already knew these styles existed, but finding them from a brand close to home proved difficult. Others were looking for a piece they could discuss, customise and purchase with confidence here in Australia.
Others would say, "When it's my turn, you'll have to help us make one."

Before long, the requests became hard to ignore. What started as answering questions and sharing recommendations turned into helping friends and other couples navigate the same search we had been through ourselves, and eventually helping a handful of them create pieces for their own weddings.

What began as a solution to our own search became a conversation we found ourselves having again and again.

So we decided to build the brand we had been looking for all along.

Every piece is designed by us.  Slowly, carefully, often around our kitchen table. Fewer beads, softer proportions, finer chains. The kind of weight you forget you're wearing until you reach for it.

Rolance's mum is still part of all of it. She is Sutraa's biggest supporter and its most honest critic, with a view on every design. Her perspective, wisdom and unwavering commitment to tradition have shaped countless decisions behind the scenes, and continue to guide the brand today.

Now, Sutraa lives in the stories of the people who wear it. In quiet mornings and ordinary days. In school drop-offs, coffee runs, boardrooms and celebrations. In the moments between milestones. In the small, daily reminder of the life you chose, and the person you chose it with.

Our story is where it began. Yours is where it continues.
